Miyajima, a Unesco World Heritage Site, has long been regarded as an island where Gods dwell and where the splendour of nature is the object of worship. Traditionally ranked as one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, its star attraction in the vermilion torii (shrine gate) which visitors can walk to at low tide. At high tide a visit to Itsukushima Shrine feels like one is walking on the sea.
